Why Ecommerce SEO Is Different

A service business might have fifty important pages. A store can have thousands of products, hundreds of categories and many more URLs created by filters, sorting, tracking parameters and variants. Most of those shouldn't be in Google's index, and the ones that should need to be clearly the best version.

That's why ecommerce SEO starts with structure: making sure search engines spend their time on the category and product pages that can earn revenue, rather than on duplicate filter combinations and out-of-date URLs.

Category Pages Do the Heavy Lifting

Searches like "men's running shoes" or "organic face serum" are usually best answered by a category page, not a single product. For many stores, category pages are where most organic revenue comes from.

We give each important category a unique title and heading built around its main search, a short, genuinely helpful introduction, clear filters, internal links to related categories, and FAQs where buyers commonly have questions. We also look for categories you should create because people search for them.

Product Pages That Earn Their Place

Manufacturer descriptions copied across many stores give search engines no reason to rank yours. Useful product pages have unique descriptions, full specifications, clear images with descriptive alt text, delivery and returns information, and reviews where you have them.

Product structured data with price, availability and reviews helps search engines understand the page and can make it eligible for richer results. We keep that data in sync with what the page shows.

Filters, Variants and Duplicate Content

Faceted navigation is useful for shoppers and dangerous for SEO. Colour, size, price and sort options can multiply into a huge number of near-identical URLs. Some filter combinations have real search demand and deserve their own indexable page; most don't.

We decide which combinations to keep, handle the rest with canonical tags, noindex or robots rules as appropriate, and make sure product variants don't compete with each other.

Shopify, WooCommerce and Custom Stores

Each platform has its own quirks. Shopify creates duplicate product URLs through collection paths and has limited control over some URL structures, while apps can slow stores down. WooCommerce gives more control but depends on theme and plugin quality, hosting and caching.

We work within each platform's constraints and are clear about what needs a theme change, an app, or a developer. See our Shopify development service if your store also needs build work.

Measuring What Matters: Revenue

Traffic is a means to an end. We set up and check ecommerce tracking in Google Analytics 4 so organic revenue can be seen by landing page and category, and report on the sections of the store that are growing or slipping.

That keeps priorities honest: a category with modest traffic and high revenue per visitor often deserves more attention than a blog post that attracts visitors who never buy.
